Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom is India's greatest woman boxer, known as "Magnificent Mary" (MC Mary Kom). She is the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship 6 times and the only boxer (male or female) to win 8 World Championship medals. Mary Kom - Early Life and Family
Mary Kom was born in Kagathei village, Moirang Lamkhai, Churachandpur district, Manipur in a poor Kom family. Her parents Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom were tenant farmers working in jhum fields. They named her Chungneijang. She is the eldest of three children - has a younger sister and brother. She grew up helping parents in farm work.
Her father was a keen wrestler in his youth. Mary Kom studied at Loktak Christian Model High School, Moirang (till 6th), then St. Xavier Catholic School, Moirang (till 8th) where she loved athletics - javelin and 400m running. Inspired by fellow Manipuri Dingko Singh's gold at 1998 Bangkok Asian Games, she decided to try boxing at age 15. She moved to Adimjati High School, Imphal for 9th-10th, failed matriculation, quit school and passed via NIOS Imphal and later graduated from Churachandpur College, Manipur University.
She hails from a Christian Baptist family. She kept boxing secret from her father fearing he would worry about her face and marriage. He learned after her photo came in newspaper for winning state championship in 2000, and after 3 years started supporting her.

Mary Kom started training under her first coach K. Kosana Meitei in Imphal in 2000. At 15 she went to Imphal Sports Academy. Her coach remembered her as hardworking with strong will power.
